Is Madeira Safe for Babies? – From One Parent to Another…
Hi there! I’m Nikola, and if you’re reading this, you’re probably in that “pre-travel jitters” phase. Believe me, I’ve been there. You’re looking at photos of Madeira’s stunning cliffs and lush mountains, but a little voice in your head is asking: “Is it actually safe to take my baby there?”
When I started Carry Baby Madeira, it was exactly to answer these questions. I wanted to make sure that parents like you could enjoy our beautiful island without the “what-ifs.”
1. The “Local” Vibe: You’re Among Friends?
The first thing you’ll notice about Madeira is that we love babies. Seriously. Don’t be surprised if a local grandmother stops to coo at your little one in the supermarket or if a waiter rushes to find you the best table for a stroller.
Portugal is one of the safest countries in the world, and here in Madeira, that peace of mind is even stronger. You can walk around Funchal or our cozy villages like Ponta do Sol with a sense of security that is hard to find elsewhere.
2. Doctors & Health (“What if my baby gets sick?”)
I know the “what if they get a fever?” worry. It’s the worst. Rest assured, we have excellent healthcare. The main hospital in Funchal has a dedicated pediatric team, and our pharmacies (Farmácias) are incredible. Most pharmacists speak English and are super helpful with minor issues like teething or sun care.

- The private hospital, Madeira Medical Center (MMC), Hospital Particular da Madeira (HPM) or Hospital da Luz.
- Pharmacies (Farmácias): You will find pharmacies everywhere. They are easily identified by a green cross. Most pharmacists speak excellent English and can provide advice on minor ailments like teething or heat rash.

Nikola’s Tip: Our tap water is safe, but for formula, I always suggest using bottled water (look for “Luso”, “Monchique” or “Atlântida– very low mineral content, perfect for babies).

3. Navigating the Terrain: Strollers vs. Carriers
This is where safety meets practicality. Madeira’s volcanic geography presents unique challenges.
-
The Sidewalks: Traditional Portuguese pavement (calçada) is beautiful but can be very bumpy for a sleeping infant. A stroller with good suspension is a must.
-
The Levadas: If you plan on hiking the famous levada trails, leave the stroller at the hotel. Many paths are narrow with steep drops. For these excursions, a high-quality ergonomic baby carrier is the only safe way to explore.
-
Safety Tip: Always check the weather before a hike. Microclimates in the mountains can cause temperatures to drop or fog to roll in rapidly.
4. Sun and the “Microclimates”
The breeze in Madeira is tricky! It feels cool, but the Atlantic sun is strong. I always tell parents to dress their babies in layers. It might be 22°C and sunny in Funchal, but if we drive up to the mountains, it can drop to 12°C really fast.
Always pack a sun hat, but keep a cozy blanket in your bag too!
5. Driving, Roads and Car Seats
-
Driving: Renting a car is the best way to see the island. However, Madeira’s roads are winding and steep. Ensure you rent a high-quality, certified car seat (ISOFIX).
-
Taxis: While many taxis are available, they don’t always carry car seats. It is safer (and easier) to book a transfer in advance that explicitly includes a baby seat.
Why I’m Here to Help
I created Carry Baby Madeira because I didn’t want you to have to pack your entire house just to feel safe. We provide the “heavy stuff”—top-tier car seats, sturdy strollers, and clean cribs—so you can land in Funchal, breathe the salty air, and just… relax.
Madeira isn’t just safe for babies; it’s a place where they are welcomed with open arms.
Got a specific question? Drop me a message! I’m here to help you make these the best first memories for your family.
See you soon in Madeira!
Love,
Nikola
